Janice Barlow is the Executive Director of Zero Breast Cancer, a non-profit organization dedicated to identifying environmental factors and the role they play in the development of breast cancer at all stages of life and across generations.  Barlow joins Speak Up! to discuss how her organization pinpoints causes of breast cancer and what women and girls can do to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer.

Zero Breast Cancer is a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding the causes of breast cancer through community participation in the research process. We focus on identifying environmental factors and the role they play in the development of breast cancer at all stages of life.

Zero Breast Cancer was founded in 1995 by a group of concerned Marin County residents who wanted to know why so many of their friends were afflicted with breast cancer.

More About Janice Barlow
Janice Barlow has been executive director of Zero Breast Cancer for the past eight years. Zero Breast Cancer is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding the causes of breast cancer through community participation in the research process. They focus on identifying environmental factors and the role they play in the development of breast cancer at all stages of life.

Janice earned her B.S. in nursing from the University of California, San Francisco.  She did her graduate work at the University of Washington and is a pediatric nurse practitioner.  She brings to Zero Breast Cancer a combination of wide-ranging experience in public health, breast cancer advocacy, community activism and Community-Based, Participatory Research (CBPR).

Janice serves as the community partner on a National Cancer Institute funded Breast Cancer Survivorship Study, Pathways, a study conducted by researchers at Kaiser Permanente of Northern California, University of California at San Francisco and Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Pathways is a prospective cohort study designed to investigate how breast cancer recurrence and survival are affected by lifestyle factors, including diet, physical activity and use of complementary or alternative medicine and molecular makers including polymorphisms and aberrant DNA methylation of genes in breast tumors.
