With the New Year and decade already dawning, WomensRadio is
proud to share with our audience several artists that we believe will be making
big waves in 2010. Read on, as this is the second round of our
predictions, accompanied by Episode
18 of the WRMusicReview Podcast.
Amy Campbell
The first thing that we noticed
about independent Canadian singer/songwriter, Amy Campbell, was an abundance of
that special “something” that all genuine songwriters seem to effortlessly
radiate from head to toe. It is our firm
belief that 2010 will be a fantastic year for Amy, who is still enjoying much
success with her Double-Disc, Oh Heart,
Oh Highway. The previous three years
of Amy’s traveling, searching, composing, sketching and writing were not in
vain, as what came out was a beautifully narrated and heartwarming walk through
the inner-workings of this Hot “Up-N-Comer”.
We see VERY big things on the horizon for this majestic songwriter.
Current Release: Oh Heart, Oh Highway 2XLP
Genre(s): Acoustic, Americana, Folk, Lo-Fi, Singer-Songwriter
Camela Widad Kraemer
Oh, her voice! It’s like bubblegum one
moment and then offers a glint of rasp the next, and all the while
oh-so-captivating! Camela Widad Kraemer
is an accomplished touring songwriter, and has room to boast, having already
added performances at several UK and US Festivals as notches to her bedpost. All the while, Camela maintains a humble and
appreciated demeanor, often saturating intimate settings such as Coffeeshops
and Songwriter Circles with her electrically-charged personality and gift of
acoustic song. The last 10 years have seen
Camela release a total of 4 albums, and 2010 marks the next step in her devoted
journey to continuing the recording and performance of her breathtaking
original material.
Current Release: Before You’re Gone LP
Genre(s): Acoustic, Americana,
Folk, Singer-Songwriter
Carley Tanchon
To be blown away by an artist
that is youthful, energetic, and brimming with talent is one of the best
feelings in the world. Carley Tanchon
does exactly that upon hearing the first note of her debut release, Peridot,
and that spine-tingling feeling doesn’t let up until the album has come to a
close. We predict VERY big things for
Carley in 2010, as this Berklee College of Music graduate and scholar is well
on her way to making a name for herself in this overflowing, and often times
cannibalistic, ocean of art and entertainment!
Current Release: Peridot LP
Genre(s): Americana, Blues, Pop,
Singer-Songwriter, Soul, Southern Rock
Halie Loren
Eugene, Oregon’s upcoming
Singer/Songwriter, Halie Loren, is ready to set the world on fire in 2010 with
her uninhibited take on Jazz standards and innate songwriting ability. Think about all of your favorite Jazz/Blues
singers from the past that have touched your life and briefly ponder exactly
what made them legendary – The voice, the presence, the emotion. Halie Loren encompasses all of these traits,
and at the young age of 25 maintains an equally balanced passion for
performance and recording. Having met up
with Halie in Nashville during Indiegrrl 2009, we can safely say that her
charisma is the first thing you’ll notice when she enters the room. Hats off to Halie, as she is certainly doing
her part in making music worth listening to in 2010 and beyond!
Current Release: They Oughta Write A Song… LP
Genre(s): Alternative, Blues, Contemporary, Downtempo, Jazz, Rock,
Singer-Songwriter
Jayme Dawicki
Indie Pop/Rock/Singer-Songwriter,
Jayme Dawicki, is not your typical DIY Indie artist working to place her city
(Milwaukee, WI) on the world’s musical map. Her highly successful debut LP, Shatter Queen, hits an apex of sound
and delivers her message loud and clear, and as 2010 moves forward, Jayme’s
music the world is hearing more and more of Jayme; having her music placed in
department stores and receiving nominations for WAMI Album of the Year and Pop
Artist of the Year. We firmly believe
that Jayme Dawicki and her music will greatly surpass any previous accolades,
and will blossom beyond all expectations throughout the next decade.
Current Release: Shatter Queen LP
Genre(s): Acoustic, Alternative,
Americana, Pop, Singer-Songwriter
Kirsten DeHaan
Woodstock, New York is famous for
many different reasons; our new favorite reason is Alternative
Singer/Songwriter, guitarist and owner of SirLady Records, Kirsten DeHaan. Kirsten has recently released a five-song EP
titled, Thorns On A Crown, which she describes in detail during a
recent interview on WomensRadio, and has garnered a gaggle of goose bumps from
fans of such favorites as Nirvana, U2 and Belly. It is evident that Kirsten delivers pure
talent in every breath that escapes her lips and through each strum of her
guitar, and through a firmly planted position in the industry, has enabled
herself to take the world by storm throughout the next decade!
Current Release: Thorns On A Crown EP
Genre(s): Acoustic, Americana, Alternative,
Pop, Rock, Singer-Songwriter
Lucia!
Lucia Nazzaro aka Lucia! is not
only one of 2010’s Hot “Up-N-Comers”, she is a prominent, multi-talented TV/Radio
Host and Reporter, Writer/Author and Motivational Speaker with a strong
pop-sensibility and almost always approaches the situation with a welcoming
deportment. Building upon her 2009
release, Dreaming Big, Lucia! is
doing just that, having recently announced a brand-new development titled, “The
Lucy D Project” as well as licensing opportunities with MTV, indie film
placement and the release of a new music video with Director/Editor Jeff
Knight, for “Last Chance”. Carrying
forward this type of momentum into the new decade, Lucia! is one artist that is
sure to keep us teetering on the edge of our seats!
Current Release: Dreaming Big LP
Genre(s): Acoustic, Alternative, Classical,
Electronic, Jazz, Pop, Singer-Songwriter, Soul
Phildel
If you’re looking to be taken
away to a faraway place by another’s creative expression through sound, pretty
much *any* song put out by Phildel will take you there. The intimacy of her vocals combined with
intrinsic pop-sense and a splash of darkness amidst an entire rainbow of
untainted emotion makes Phildel, hands down, one of the greatest artists you’ll
hear in 2010. Like her lyrics suggest,
Phildel has sent a storm to capture our hearts, and has brought us home through
her sweet symphony of song, and guarantees to do the same for any listener to
cross her musical path.
Current Release: Tales From The Moonsea EP
Genre(s): Contemporary, Electronic,
Indie, Lo-Fi, Singer-Songwriter
Sarah Elizabeth Foster
New York is brimming with talent,
and amidst the chaos of speeding taxi’s and polluting delivery vehicles is
classically trained and multilingual vocalist, Sarah Elizabeth Foster, who’s
debut EP, Gardening From The Ground Up,
is doing just that – building a solid and successful career on a foundation of
songs that exhibit an accomplished and hauntingly beautiful manner, reserved
most often for the later years of an artist’s career. As Sarah continues to garden from the ground
up, we can assuredly boast precognition of her success throughout the upcoming
years.
Current Release: Gardening From The Ground Up EP
Genre(s): Acoustic-Electric,
Alternative, Indie, Jazz, Lo-Fi, Rock, Singer-Songwriter
Shannon Curtis
Three words to describe Shannon
Curtis: Ultimate pop sensation. We could
stop there, but why pass up the opportunity to let you know that you can have
Shannon be your singing Valentine this February 14th?! Literally, if you’re looking for an amazingly
talented singer/songwriter to share in the beauty of love songs with, look no
further, as this Southern California star-studded songstress has consistently
delivered three solid releases since 2007, and is showing no sign of slowing
down in the new year with tour dates spanning from Colorado to Missouri, LA to
NYC and back again.
Current Release: Why Don’t You Stay? EP
Genre(s): Blues, Cabaret, Folk,
Lo-Fi, Pop, Rock, Singer-Songwriter, Soul
Shunda K
With talent dripping out of every
pore on her body, Shunda K holds back nothing in her relentless push onward and
upward in an industry that for decades has been holding female hip-hop artists
down or forcing them to compromise their artistic vision to earn a comfortable
living. Not Shunda K – uh uh, no way,
not now, not then, not ever. Finishing
out her Jan./Feb. Australian tour unofficially titled, “Shunda Down Unda: Da
Takeova!”, Shunda K can be seen on stage performing her brilliant collaboration
with Peaches titled, “Billionaire” as part of their collaborative effort to
bring Peaches + Shunda K’s electro/hip-hop superstardom to the masses of the Southern
Hemisphere throughout their summertime club/concert/festival season, and just
in time to return to the states for SXSW + more!

Hip-Hop, Indie, Pop, Rap, R&B
Teri A. Coutu
When you give an artist room to
do what they do best, take the time to creatively dot all of the I’s and cross
all the t’s of their work, you will end up with an album like Teri A. Coutu’s
debut, Answer Me. Teri’s music expands upon a refined Mexican
songwriting style and blends blues and rock elements to provide the perfect
accompaniment to her strong and seductive voice. Not that we have superhuman powers, or that
we’re “just that good”, but a little birdie tells us that Teri A. Coutu is one
woman to watch out for, as we move out of the 2000’s and into the “twenty
ten’s”.
Current Release: Answer Me LP
Genre(s): Acoustic, Americana,
Blues, Jazz, Rock, Singer-Songwriter
Vagina Panther
If the catchy guitar riffs don’t
get you, the vocal carnage reaped by front woman Dead June is sure to chew you
up and spit you out into the foreign world of claymation created especially for
their acclaimed music video, “Dave, You Are Killing Me”. This Brooklyn, NY band features excellent
musicianship all throughout from Dead June on vocals & guitar, Kit
Days on Guitar, Johnathan Swass on Bass and Trent Good on
Drums; weighing in at about 30 minutes in length, the album gains a high replay
value with plenty of bite-sized servings to feed the über-short attention spans
of our digitally-merged generations. By
our calculations, the twenty ten’s are already much brighter, now that Vagina
Panther is on the scene.
Current Release: Vagina Panther LP
Genre(s): Alternative, Grunge,
Indie, Punk, Rock
Vanessa Pellon
How can y
ou not love a woman who
insists on doing takes of her playing guitar in the bathtub? Los Angeles is home to a lot of musical
greats, and Vanessa Pellon is one singer/songwriter that is sure to stand out,
and having a diverse background in both business and music, is using both to
elevate her brutally honest and charismatic style to the top. There is a passion that stirs deep within the
belly of Vanessa Pellon’s music, and through this passion arrives a medium for
both musician and listener to connect and share in the intimate and omnipresent
experience of song. We’re confident that
as Vanessa’s music blossoms throughout the twenty ten’s, it will carry a scent
captivating as that of a rose in full bloom, luring the listener in closely for
maximum listening pleasure.
Current Release: Porcelain Diary LP
Genre(s): Acoustic-Electric,
Americana, Lo-Fi, Singer-Songwriter
Zera Vaughan
If Tunisian-born Zera Vaughan
hadn’t taken that vacation to London while studying music at the Paris Music
Conservatory, and hadn’t been introduced to the music of Massive Attack, Tricky
and Portishead, or had her father not played Ella Fitzgerald for her as a young
girl, the exuding magic on her sophomore release, The New Seed, may never have
come to be. It is our stern belief that
the twenty ten’s will be a very successful time for Zera Vaughan and her
signature combination of downtempo electronics on top of acoustic, analogous
sounds and candy-like vox – blurring the boundaries between pop, rock,
electronic and often times songwriting as a whole. We are very excited to discover what Zera has
in mind for her junior release, and anticipate it will arrive soon!
Current Release: The New Seed LP
Genre(s): Alternative, Downtempo,
Electronic, Indie, Lo-Fi, Pop, Rock, Singer-Songwriter
