Forever Young and Beautiful

By Pat Lynch, Host of Speak Up!
Speak Up! invites women, and also men, who “speak” to women in terms of their values, their goals and their strong sense of community, to address issues, opportunities and successes that need to be heard by a larger audience of women leaders.

Dr. Laura A. Briggs is the Vice President of Research and Discovery at Sierra Sciences, a Reno bio-tech company striving to cure aging.  She has been in medical research for over 15 years and also serves as the Biology Lab Coordinator for Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC). Dr. Briggs joins Speak Up! to talk about her company’s research on cell aging and what people can do to prevent it. Laura will also be speaking at the Nevada Women's Expo, March 27th through March 28th at the Reno Sparks Convention Center, Reno, NV.

More about Dr. Laura A. Briggs
For the last ten years, Dr. Laura A. Briggs has been a key scientist at the Reno bio-tech company Sierra Sciences, focusing exclusively on finding ways to extend human lifespan through the intervention of telomere shortening in human cells.  Sierra Sciences’ ultimate mission is to cure aging and allow everyone to live healthy, youthful lives for as long as they choose.

Dr. Briggs received her B.S. degree in Nutrition in 1993 and her Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Health in 2000 from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR).  After a one year post-doctoral position at UNR, she joined Sierra Sciences in 2001.  In 2003, Dr. Briggs was promoted to Director of Cell Biology, a position where she managed a team of approximately ten scientists.

In 2008, Dr. Briggs was promoted again, to Vice President of Research and Discovery, and placed in charge of all scientific research at Sierra Sciences.  Under Dr. Briggs’ direction, Sierra Sciences has developed the most advanced assay in existence for analyzing the chemical induction of telomerase, the key protein involved in telomere maintenance; has screened hundreds of thousands of chemicals in that assay; and has already doubled the potency of what was previously the most potent telomerase activator ever discovered.

As a leading expert on telomere biology and anti-aging research, Dr. Briggs has spoken on the subject of telomere biology at scientific conferences in several U.S. states, as well as in both France and Spain.

In addition to coordinating research and discovery at Sierra Sciences, Dr. Briggs is also currently serving as the Biology Lab Coordinator for Truckee Meadows Community College , where she has been recognized for her administrative and teaching excellence, and has collaborated on research projects at the V.A. Medical Center in
Reno, Nevada.
