Richard Koob on Purpose in Lava Land

Richard Koob is co-founder, with his now-in-spirit dance partner Earnest Morgan, of Kalani Honua on the Big Island of Hawaii. Richard is a larger-than-life enthusiast of loving in all directions, translating his views of life into vibrant colors, in paintings and writings.

As of June 1st, 2018 Richard is one of 10 people remaining on site at Kalani, in the southeast corner of the Big Island, where all the lava has been flowing since May 3rd, 2018. This is the area of Hawaii that Lynn Thompson visited in December 2017 when she had the opportunity to meet and record conversation with Richard.

Now, mid-June, Richard reports: The lava has inundated the Kapoho tidal pool areas and sadly, now a total of about 700 homes have been lost. The area’s residents have evacuated, some to shelters in Kea’au and in Pahoa, where I performed last night with the Puna Men’s Chorus. As Pele transforms the coastal landscape, new black sand beaches are being formed, a continuing creative process through this Island’s two-million-year history.  So, although we here at Kalani have lava activity to the north and the south, our air’s been clean and the ocean calm with dolphins welcoming me in on several of my daily mile-long swims.  Aloha abounds and adventure beckons on ever-bigger Hawai’i Island.  Kalani Honua is becoming a place of refuge for friends in need, and also soon welcoming all who have retreated to come advance with us in the dance of ocean breezes, Hi’iaka’s verdant forest, deep blue sea, and Pele’s fiery ecstasy.
